As a firefighter, I’m used to ringing in the New Year in my hometown—standing watch, ready to ensure everyone else’s celebrations are safe. This year, I traded my firehouse for Beijing’s bustling streets, embracing the magic of Chinese New Year. It was a journey that ignited a new kind of spark in my heart.
Landing in a City of Lanterns

From the moment I landed at Beijing Capital International Airport, the city’s festive spirit was impossible to miss. Red lanterns adorned every street, their warm glow symbolizing prosperity and happiness. It felt like the whole city had been lit up just for the occasion.
My first stop was Wangfujing Street, a food lover’s paradise. The aroma of dumplings, roasted chestnuts, and skewered lamb filled the air. As a firefighter, I know a thing or two about heat, but the spices in the street food here brought a fiery kick I hadn’t experienced before.
A Night at the Temple Fair

No Chinese New Year experience is complete without visiting a temple fair. I chose the one at Ditan Park, which was alive with traditional performances, craft stalls, and food vendors. Watching lion dances and acrobatic performances up close was mesmerizing. The skill and precision reminded me of the teamwork and discipline we practice in the firehouse.
I also joined the locals in making wishes for the year ahead, tying a red ribbon to a wishing tree. Standing there, surrounded by the laughter and chatter of families, I felt a deep sense of connection—a reminder of why I love my line of work: serving and protecting communities.
Fireworks and Family Traditions

As a firefighter, I’ve often seen the darker side of fireworks displays, but here in Beijing, they were a breathtaking spectacle. The sky exploded with vibrant colors, each burst more dazzling than the last. Locals told me the fireworks weren’t just for fun; they were meant to chase away evil spirits and welcome good fortune.
I was lucky enough to be invited to a family dinner on New Year’s Eve, where I learned how to make dumplings. The warmth of their hospitality was heartening. The father of the family joked that I must be an expert at handling fire, so I’d have no trouble steaming the dumplings!
Exploring Beijing’s History

The days following New Year’s Day were spent exploring Beijing’s rich history. I climbed the Great Wall, marveled at the grandeur of the Forbidden City, and wandered through the tranquil Summer Palace. Each site was a reminder of China’s deep-rooted traditions and resilience—values I hold dear as a firefighter.
Final Word
Leaving Beijing, I carried more than just souvenirs; I brought back memories of warmth, laughter, and cultural richness. Experiencing Chinese New Year in Beijing was a reminder of the importance of community and the beauty of traditions.
To my fellow firefighters and adventurers, I say this: step out of your comfort zone and embrace the world’s celebrations. You might just discover a new flame worth kindling.
