Discover Ojo de Agua de Ranas, Mexico

campo alegre, Ojo de Agua de Ranas

Named for the Chichimecas, the hidden paradise of Ojo de Agua de Ranas, meaning “Frogs Eye of Water”, is located only three hours from Mexico City, in the Sierra Gorda Mountains of Queretaro State.

If you want to get away from the city for the weekend and you’re on a budget, this may be your best option.

Within the Campo Alegre National Park you can go hiking, biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, rappelling, zip-lining, or ride ATVs across the many rivers, caves, former convents, mines and towns near the park. If you are lucky you might come across cave paintings and other undiscovered artefacts. Simply relax and enjoy nature at a convenient shelter or a comfortable cabin with a kitchen, terrace and grill. There is nothing better than sitting back and listening to the sounds of nature in a relaxing and pristine environment.

Close by are the Los Herrera caves, located in the village of San Joaquin, where you can see impressive geological formations of stalagmites and stalactites. Here you can also take a visit to the local marketplace to buy handmade local souvenirs and handicrafts typical of the region.

Archaeological Site of Las Ranas

The archaeological site of La Ranas was an important Chichimeca ceremonial, political and economic centre. This pre-Columbian city was built on top of two hills and was once used as a fortress city, that controlled trade and movement between the Huasteca and Sierra Gorda regions. The city has a ball game, main square, ceremonial temples and a spectacular view. The state of Queretaro offers a wide variety of options for interacting with nature for all types of travellers.
