Getting to know Guanajuato, Mexico…

Beautiful old Building in Guanajuato, MexicoGuanajuato is located in the central part of Mexico, to the northwest of Mexico City and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is known for its beautiful colonial-era architecture, well-preserved buildings and cobblestone streets. Walking through the streets of Guanajuato is like travelling back in time.

I don’t know why but when some people hear the name “Guanajuato” they assume it is a small Mexican town in the middle of the countryside with nothing to do. For me, the city of Guanajuato is a very magical place… and I will tell you why.

Guanajuato is a city full of interesting legends and unique places. One of the most famous places in the city is the “Callejón del Beso” (Alley of the Kiss), an alleyway so narrow that two young lovers living in houses opposite the alleyway were able to kiss simply by leaning over the edge of their balconies. The legend says that if you kiss your partner at that exact spot, you will fall in love forever.

At night, the city comes alive with student musical groups, who wander the streets of Guanajuato singing, playing guitars and serenading everyone along the way. The lyrics of the songs relate local tales, a fun and interesting way to learn about some of the rich history of Guanajuato.

If you are looking for something a little more interesting, make a visit to the Mina de Rayas, the city’s first mine, discovered in 1550. The Mina de Valenciana is still in operation today and is known as one of the richest mines in Guanajuato. It once supplied enough silver to sponsor the Spanish Empire and its colonies. Some people say the mines are haunted by the spirits of those that worked and died here.

Apart from these three places in the city there is a wealth of interesting places to see and viewpoints from which to enjoy the city. Take your time and wander around, letting yourself get lost in the maze-like marketplaces and alleyways. Have a coffee at the main plaza and let the world pass you by. It’s no doubt that you will have an amazing experience exploring this beautiful and historically rich city.
