Malaysia Arrest Tourists for Taking a Naked Picture on a Sacred Mountain

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, June 10th – Four tourists were arrested with charges of public indecency for taking nude photos on the top of Mount Kinabalu, an act that caused, some officials say, the earthquake of June 5th that killed 18 people.

The climbers are being accused of posing naked for a photograph, and to insult the guide who tried to stop them on top of Mount Kinabalu, a mountain which is considered sacred by many in the country.

On Tuesday, British Briton Eleanor Hawkins was detained while trying to board a flight in Malaysia’s Tawau Airport. Later on the same day, Dutch tourist Dylan Snel, and Canadians Lindsey Petersen and his sister Danielle turned themselves in to Malaysian police. On Wednesday they were ordered to serve four days in detention while the investigation is being conducted. They could face a sentence of up to three months jail or fine or both if convicted.

Officers have been searching for the other group members, but some must have already left the country, according to Ronny Cham, lawyer of the detained tourists.

Some officials say that this act caused the quake: There is almost certainly a connection. We have to take this as a reminder that local beliefs and customs are not to be disrespected” said Joseph Pairin Kitingan, Chief Minister of Sabah about the Mount Kinabalu incident, the Malay Mail reported.
