Everyone has heard of Mount Everest, the roof of the world, and the ultimate challenge for any passionate climber. Nonetheless, it’s a very unforgiving summit! So if you are going to tackle the beast, you need to be prepared. And no matter the technological development over the years, mother nature is a fickle lady, so the risks are high! Even if you don’t want to get to the top, you still might want a closer look. So here are some of the pros and cons of a Mount Everest adventure.
High: Go Where Few Have Been Before
Reaching the highest point on Earth, what could be more satisfying? You are quite literally on top of the world, and only a few thousand people have been there before you! Training hard and making sacrifices can pay off when you reach the top of Mount Everest.
Low: Altitude Sickness
The biggest risk to climb Mount Everest, is altitude sickness. It is provoked by the reduced amount of oxygen present in the air. The higher you go up the mountain, your body takes more time to adapt itself until a certain point. Getting beyond 8,000 metres is considered the Death Zone. At this point, there is not enough oxygen in the air for humans to breathe. There has been over 200 deaths on Mount Everest, and it is no coincidence that nearly all of them happened past this point.
High: Friends Make The Journey Worthwhile
Planning a trip to Everest can be a great adventure for you, and your friends. Gathering your nearest and dearest to complete the trip of a lifetime and to get, even close to the top of the world will be something you will remember forever. And it makes it that much more fun, no matter how far you get. Remember, it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.
Low: Even Getting To The Airport Is Dangerous
If you are intent on making it to Everest, an essential part of the adventure is flying into Lukla airport, considered the most dangerous airport in the world. With a runway of only 527 metres (1,729 feet) and most of the flight spent narrowly navigating mountains, you will definitely have a lot more courage by the time you land.
High: Trekking to Base Camp is Awesome Too!
Not everyone is prepared to face the challenges of attempting to make it to the top of Everest, and we totally get it! But that doesn’t mean you aren’t ready to get involved in part of the adventure. The trek to base camp is an achievement all on its own. It takes around 9 days to get there, and adjusting to the altitude is a big test on your body. With that being said, the work really pays off with stunning views along the way, and a Sherpa to indulge you in the history and culture of the surrounding environment.
