Embracing the Andean Spirit: My Fashionable Salkantay Trek Adventure

As a fashion designer constantly seeking inspiration, I embarked on a journey that tested my strength and ignited my wanderlust: the Salkantay Trek. This adventure, organized by a local travel expert through a reputable travel agency platform, was nothing short of transformative. Here’s a glimpse into my five-day journey through the Peruvian Andes with a small group tour that has forever changed me.

Day 1: Soraypampa Camp, Peru

The journey began at dawn, with our small group gathered and ready for an early start. We were picked up between 5:00 – 5:15 am and traveled by tourist-class bus to Mollepata, where we stretched our legs and stocked up on snacks.

The ride continued to Challacancha, where final preparations and equipment checks were done. The excitement was palpable as we embarked on a 3-hour walk to Soraypampa, our first campsite at 3,920m.

Lunch was served with panoramic views of snow-capped mountains that took my breath away. Later, we hiked up to Laguna de Humantay, a pristine lake that seemed to mirror the sky. As the highest and coldest campsite of the trip, Soraypampa was a true immersion in nature. After dinner, we slept early, ready for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Colcapampa Camp

Our day began with breakfast at 6:00 am, followed by a challenging 4-hour walk to the trek’s highest pass at 4,650m, nestled between Salkantay and Humantay mountains. The optional horse rental to reach the high pass was tempting, but the thrill of the hike won me over. The views from the pass, framed by the snow-capped giants, were awe-inspiring.

A 2-hour downhill hike brought us to Huayracpampa for a well-deserved lunch. Refueled, we continued for another 3 hours to our campsite at Challhuay or Colcapampa, marking the transition into the high jungle region at 2,900 meters.

Day 3: Santa Teresa Town

After a 6:30 am breakfast, we trekked through the upper jungle, crossing the Santa Teresa River and numerous brooks. The day was filled with breathtaking views of valleys, waterfalls, and lush tropical flora.

We reached La Playa for lunch before driving to Santa Teresa town, our warmer camp for the night at 1,700 meters. The optional visit to the local hot springs was irresistible—a soothing reward for three days of rigorous trekking.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes, Peru

Our final day on the trail began with breakfast at 8:00 am, followed by a 3-hour walk along a relaxing path to the hydroelectric station. From there, it was another 3-hour slight uphill trek to Aguas Calientes, where we could finally rest and recharge. The anticipation of visiting Machu Picchu the next day filled the air as we dined at a traditional local restaurant.

Day 5: Machu Picchu, Peru

We caught one of the first buses to Machu Picchu at 5:30 am, arriving just in time to witness the magnificent city bathed in the early morning light. Our guide provided a fascinating 2-hour tour, and then we were free to explore on our own. Climbing Huayna Picchu Peak was an optional adventure I couldn’t pass up, offering stunning views of the ancient city below.

After an exhilarating day, we took the bus back to Aguas Calientes, followed by a train ride to Ollantaytambo and a bus to Cuzco. Arriving at Plaza San Francisco around 6:30 pm, we parted ways, each of us transformed by the journey.

Final Word

The Salkantay Trek was more than a physical challenge; it was a profound experience that connected me to nature and inspired my soul. The beauty of the Andes, the camaraderie of our small group, and the expertise of our local travel guide made this adventure unforgettable.

I can’t wait to return and let this journey inspire my next fashion collection. If you’re seeking an adventure that stirs your spirit, I highly recommend booking through a trusted travel agency platform. Until then, my heart remains in the Andes, where the mountains whisper stories of strength and beauty.
