My Inspiring Journey on the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu

As a beauty queen with a deep appreciation for nature, I recently embarked on an unforgettable adventure—the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu with Bamba Travel. This journey not only tested my physical endurance but also enriched my soul with the raw beauty of the Peruvian Andes and the warmth of the Quechua communities. Here’s a detailed account of my four-day trek, highlighting the unique experiences and breathtaking landscapes that made this journey so special.

Day 1: Cuzco to Wakawasi

The adventure began bright and early as I was picked up from my accommodation in Cuzco between 5:00 and 6:00 am. Our destination was Lares Town, nestled at 2,900 meters. The allure of the hot springs tempted me, but I opted to save my energy for the trek ahead. Our six-hour hike took us through a zigzagging climb, eventually leading us to the picturesque town of Wakawasi at 3,850 meters.

The journey was graced with stunning views of glaciers and diverse wildlife. Meeting the local families in Wakawasi was a highlight of the day. Their traditional attire and harmonious way of living with nature were both inspiring and humbling. Despite the physical demands of the trek, the serene beauty of the surroundings made every step worthwhile.

Day 2: Wakawasi to Patacancha

The second day presented a more challenging hike, trekking up to the top of Ipsayccocha Pass at 4,400 meters. The four-hour ascent was rewarded with a peaceful moment at the pass, where the panoramic views left me in awe. After a brief descent, we enjoyed lunch by a serene lake before continuing our journey to Patacancha town.

Camping in Patacancha was a magical experience. Surrounded by llamas and alpacas amidst native crop plantations, I felt a deep connection with the land and its inhabitants. The day’s 15-kilometer trek, though exhausting, was a testament to the resilience and simplicity of life in the Andes.

Day 3: Patacancha to Aguas Calientes

On the third day, we trekked for four hours to Ollantaytambo. The downhill journey was less strenuous, and the anticipation of reaching Aguas Calientes kept our spirits high. After a satisfying lunch, we boarded a train to Aguas Calientes, where we would spend the night in a comfortable hotel.

The town of Aguas Calientes, nestled at the base of Machu Picchu, was charming and bustling with energy. With some free time before nightfall, I explored the quaint streets, indulging in local cafes and shops. The excitement for the next day’s adventure to Machu Picchu was palpable.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu to Cuzco

The final day of our trek was the most anticipated. We took an early bus at 5:30 am to Machu Picchu, eager to witness the ancient city bathed in the soft morning light. The sight of Machu Picchu emerging from the mist was nothing short of magical. Our two-hour guided tour provided fascinating insights into the history and significance of this iconic site.

After the guided tour, I explored Machu Picchu on my own, soaking in the mystical atmosphere. Though tempted to climb Huayna Picchu Peak, I chose to spend more time wandering through the ruins, reflecting on the journey that led me here. We returned to Aguas Calientes by bus, explored the local marketplace, and eventually made our way back to Cuzco, arriving in the evening.

The Lares Trek to Machu Picchu was a life-changing experience. The physical challenges were overshadowed by the breathtaking landscapes and the profound sense of peace that nature imparted. From the snow-capped mountains to the vibrant Quechua villages, every moment was a reminder of the beauty and resilience of the natural world.

This trek deepened my appreciation for nature and the simple, harmonious way of life of the Andean communities. If you’re seeking an adventure that combines cultural immersion with awe-inspiring landscapes, the Lares Trek with Bamba Travel is an experience you won’t want to miss.
