Three Critically Endangered Mountain Gorillas Born in Uganda

Mountain Gorillas

There are less than 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the world, and over half of these reside in Uganda’s dense forest. Due to how critically endangered this species is, Uganda was delighted to announce this week that three new babies have been born since August. The newest mountain gorilla was born in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in late September, and is appropriately named named “Masiko,” or “Hope”.

These magnificent animals are a huge draw for zoologists and tourists alike. Uganda’s national parks have worked diligently to protect the species, and the number of mountain gorillas has steadily increased over the last 20 years. Despite this promising growth, mountain gorillas remain extremely threatened due to poaching, habitat loss, and other human activity.

One of these pervading issues is that gorillas are susceptible to many of the same illnesses as humans. With tourism in Uganda increasing, keeping the gorillas and the tourists healthy is critically important. Visitors to Bwindi and Mgahinga are required to stay 21 feet from the gorillas at all times to prevent the passing of bacteria and are advised not to track gorillas if they are experiencing any symptoms of illness.

The three new mountain gorillas are a wonderful sign of the success of national parks and reserves, the resilience and beauty of these animals, and the grave importance of being a responsible tourist.
