After exploring the Top Cities in the USA: East Coast Edition, it’s time to check out what the West Coast has to offer. It’s a popular roadtrip destination for young traveller’s seeking adventure and offers so much to see and do along that 30 hour stretch between the Canadian and Mexican border. But with the views from the Pacific Coast Highway to enjoy: one of the most scenic drives in the world, big cities to explore and golden beaches to relax on, along the way, there is no reason to rush through your American dream.
1. San Francisco, California
A vibrant city filled with eccentric districts and amazing attractions, no two days are ever the same. Enjoy a cocktail on Castro. History? Take a ferry out to Alcatraz Island. Landmarks? Grab yourself a bicycle and make your way over the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and down to Sausalito for a delicious ice-cream, and cruise back over to Pier 39 for all the touristy souvenirs and experiences you could ever dream of! Like many before you, you will no doubt leave your heart in San Francisco.
2. San Diego, California
At the other end of Cali, you can experience a completely different kind of vibe. San Diego offers beautiful beaches and a relaxing atmosphere with a bit of that city living. Craft beer is huge here, and with over 140 different breweries, you will be spoilt for choice. The San Diego Zoo is still a huge attraction for tourists, but what really lures you in, is the water. People travel far and wide to experience a great surf, to sail the seas or to even go whale spotting so don’t miss out on this epic costal city.
3. Seattle, Washington
Home to the original Starbucks, this gives us more than enough reason to add Seattle to our list. Known as the New York of the West Coast, each corner of the city has something to offer. Climb to the top of the Space Needle, one of America’s most recognisable landmarks and soak in the views of the skyline. For entertainment head to Capitol Hill or for a leisurely stroll move on to Beacon Hill, one of Seattle’s more diverse neighbourhoods with a huge 43-acre park to enjoy.
4. Portland, Oregon
The home of the hipsters, eco-activists and ultimate foodies- Portland has to be one of the coolest cities in the USA. Everyone moves at a slower pace here, so enjoy strolling the streets while grabbing a latte from an independent coffee shop, a delicious acai bowl from the many vegan restaurants and browsing the bookshelves of a secondhand book shop. Truly immerse yourself in the liberal heart of Oregon.
5. The Big Sur, California
Ok, so not technically a City, but this had to make our list. If you are travelling the West Coast, this is a drive you NEED to experience. The wild coastline stretches from San Simeon and Carmel and offers endless views of rugged shorelines and hidden coves with thick fog rolling in early on summer mornings. Roll the windows down, blast the music, and enjoy every second of this scenic adventure.
