Watching a wildebeest migration first-hand on a safari in Africa may possibly be one of the most miraculous scenes experienced in life. During the summer months of July and August, nearly 1.5 million wildebeest embark on an epic 1,600-kilometre journey to reach the fertile lands of the Masai Mara Game Reserve.
During the winter months of November through March, millions of wildebeests migrate south in search of Serengeti’s rich grassy plains, accompanied by thousands of zebras, gazelles and predatory animals. The wildebeests seek shelter here in this nourishing environment to give birth to their calves during the month of February. By the time their babies are a few months old, and the dry season begins in the Serengeti, herds of wildebeest begin migrating north seeking fresh water and food. By July and August, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest begin congregating along the banks of the Grumeti and Mara Rivers, the biggest obstacle these animals must face in order to reach Maasai Mara Game Reserve where they will find food and water. The wildebeest must forge their way across the river and avoid falling prey to the hungry crocodiles that await their arrival. The scene of a river crossing is a spectacular sight if you are in the right place at the right time. As thousands of wildebeest attempt to cross the river, they become frantic and confused as chaos ensues. Some consider it one of the most miraculous and raw scenes they have ever witnessed in nature. The wildebeest herds that cross the river successfully continue their journey north to the safety of Maasai Mara Game Reserve, only to start their journey again a few months later.
