The allure of the ocean has always held a special place in my heart. The crashing waves, the salty breeze, and the endless horizon beckon to me like a siren’s call. So when the opportunity arose to embark on a surfing adventure to Peru, I couldn’t resist. With a group of fellow enthusiasts, I set off on a 4-day surfing vacation to Punta Hermosa, a picturesque surf town just an hour south of Lima.
Day 1: Lima - Punta Hermosa, Peru
The small group tour began with excitement coursing through my veins as I made my way to Lima. From there, our group was whisked away to Punta Hermosa, the hometown of Sofia Mulanovich, a legendary figure in the world of women’s surfing. As we settled into our accommodations, anticipation for the days ahead bubbled within me.
Day 2: Punta Hermosa, Peru
Waking up to the sound of crashing waves, I knew today was the day I would finally step onto a surfboard. After a hearty breakfast, our group gathered for our first surf lesson. The local travel experts and surf instructors, fluent in both English and Spanish, exuded passion for the sport and a commitment to safety.
The lesson began with a thorough introduction to the equipment followed by an overview of ocean awareness, currents, and proper surfing etiquette. With boards in hand, we ventured into the water under the watchful eye of our instructors. The initial struggles were met with laughter and encouragement as we navigated the waves together.
As the day progressed, I found myself becoming more attuned to the rhythm of the ocean. With each wave conquered, a sense of accomplishment washed over me. And when the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow upon the water, I knew I had found my happy place.
Day 3: Confidence in the Water
With newfound confidence, I eagerly embraced another day of surfing. The morning sun illuminated the waves as we paddled out into the ocean once again. This time, the movements felt more fluid, the balance more natural.
Between sessions, I took the opportunity to explore the charm of Punta Hermosa. From quaint cafes to vibrant markets, the town pulsated with energy and warmth. And yet, it was the ocean that held me captive, its endless expanse a canvas for endless possibilities.

As our time in Punta Hermosa drew to a close, a sense of melancholy settled over our group. We had forged bonds over shared triumphs and moments of vulnerability, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to this enchanting surf town, knowing that our journey had only just begun. As I boarded the plane back to Lima, I couldn’t help but reflect on the transformation I had undergone in just a few short days.
Realizations
Through the highs and lows of learning to surf, I discovered a newfound sense of resilience within myself. The ocean had become my teacher, imparting lessons of patience, perseverance, and humility. And as I rode the waves, I realized that the true beauty of surfing lies not in mastering the ocean, but in surrendering to its power.
