My Incredible Healing Journey on the Inca Trail Express

As a heart doctor, my days are often filled with the hustle and bustle of the hospital corridors, where every beat counts. But even a heart doctor needs a break, a chance to reconnect with nature and find inspiration in the world beyond the operating room. That’s why I embarked on a journey to the mystical land of Peru, specifically the famed Inca Trail Express, a condensed yet exhilarating trek through the Andean Mountains, culminating in the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu

Join me on this adventure as I share my experiences, reflections, and heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to explore this ancient wonder.

Why I Chose the Inca Trail Express

When faced with the choice of numerous trekking options in Peru, the Inca Trail Express stood out like a beacon of adventure. Offering a perfect balance of challenge and accessibility, this two-day trek promised to lead me through the footsteps of the ancient Incas while unveiling the splendor of Machu Picchu at journey’s end. As someone deeply connected to the healing power of nature, I couldn’t resist the allure of traversing the original stone staircases and pathways that have stood the test of time.

Preparation for the Inca Trail

Preparing for any trek requires meticulous planning, especially for someone accustomed to the controlled environment of a hospital.

With the help of my trusted local travel expert, I made sure to pack essentials such as sturdy hiking boots, breathable clothing, and of course, my trusty stethoscope (you never know when it might come in handy!). Mentally, I prepared myself for the physical challenges ahead, knowing that each step would be a testament to resilience and determination.

The journey began before the break of dawn, with an early accommodation pick-up and a transfer to the Ollantaytambo train station. From there, we embarked on a 4-hour hike uphill, immersing ourselves in the rugged beauty of the Andean landscape.

Our path led us to the archaeological site of Wiñayhuayna, where our knowledgeable guide regaled us with tales of Inca culture and history. After a well-deserved lunch, we pressed on, ascending to the Inti Punku, or Sun Gate, where the breathtaking views of Machu Picchu awaited us like a hidden treasure. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we made our way to Aguas Calientes, our resting place for the night, eager for the adventures that awaited us on day two.

Day 2: Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu to Cuzco

With anticipation bubbling in our hearts, we boarded a tourist-class bus bound for Machu Picchu in the early hours of the morning. Guided by a professional bilingual guide, we embarked on a journey through time, exploring the ancient wonders of this mystical citadel.

From the iconic stone structures to the panoramic vistas that stretched as far as the eye could see, every moment felt like a brushstroke on the canvas of history. After the guided tour, we had the freedom to wander at our leisure, soaking in the magical ambiance of Machu Picchu.

Some opted to hike Huayna Picchu, while others chose to bask in the serenity of this sacred place. As the day drew to a close, we bid farewell to Machu Picchu and returned to Aguas Calientes, our hearts full and our spirits soaring. With memories etched in our minds and a renewed appreciation for the wonders of the world, we made our way back to Cuzco, our souls forever touched by the magic of the Inca Trail Express.
