It’s been a whirlwind few weeks since our dreamy wedding, and now, my partner and I are embarking on an incredible journey to one of Peru’s most enchanting destinations – Rainbow Mountain. What better way to kickstart our married life than with a two-day trek through this mesmerizing natural wonder? Join us as we recount the magical moments and breathtaking vistas of our Rainbow Mountain Trek.
Day 1: Cuzco - Llamachimpana
Our adventure began with an early morning pick-up from our cozy accommodation in Cuzco. With hearts full of excitement and anticipation, we set off on a mesmerizing drive through the picturesque South Valley of Peru. The landscape was a patchwork of vibrant green fields and rugged mountains, setting the perfect tone for our journey.
After a few hours on the road, we reached Pitumarca, where we indulged in a delightful lunch to fuel our bodies for the adventures ahead. The local cuisine was a true treat, offering a taste of the rich flavors that define Peruvian culture.
Our journey continued as we made our way to the trailhead at Quesoyuni, located at an impressive altitude of 4,326 meters (14,189 feet). As we embarked on the hike, we couldn’t help but be in awe of the stunning scenery around us. We strolled through charming villages, interacting with the friendly locals who welcomed us with warm smiles and shared stories of their way of life.
One of the most memorable moments was encountering the adorable chinchillas and elusive vicunas, a unique member of the llama family that roams freely in these high-altitude regions of Peru. Observing these creatures in their natural habitat was a rare and captivating experience.
After a rewarding hike of 3-4 hours, we reached our campsite, nestled near the village of Llamachimpana. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we were treated to a breathtaking display of stars in the clear night sky. It was a serene and peaceful night’s sleep, surrounded by the tranquility of the Andean wilderness.
Day 2: Llamachimpana - Cuzco, Peru
With the first light of day, we awoke to a crisp mountain breeze and the promise of an adventure-filled day ahead. After a hearty breakfast, we geared up for the highlight of our journey – the Rainbow Mountain itself.
The hike to Rainbow Mountain was an early morning ascent filled with anticipation. As we climbed higher, the landscapes became increasingly enchanting. The vibrant colors of Rainbow Mountain began to reveal themselves, creating a surreal and almost otherworldly atmosphere. It was a visual feast for the senses, and the feeling of accomplishment upon reaching the summit was truly indescribable.
After spending ample time absorbing the breathtaking views and capturing countless photos to remember this moment forever, we descended to the nearby Red Valley viewpoint. This hidden gem offered a unique perspective of the surrounding valleys, painted in stunning shades of red and orange.
Our descent continued, taking us past two beautiful lagoons, Cochayoc and Yanacocha. The crystal-clear waters mirrored the pristine blue skies above, creating a picturesque scene that felt like something out of a dream.
We concluded our trek with a delicious lunch back in Llamachimpana, savoring the flavors of Peru one last time before heading back to Cuzco. As we made our way back to the city, we couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible experiences and memories we had gathered during our Rainbow Mountain adventure.
