How Travelling Makes You a Better Person

Travelling not only makes you a better person, but it also makes you a better and happier human being.

After a long time away from home, you’ll learn much more than a few lessons, you’ll actually start an important life-changing process. Maybe you’ll notice it on your own or maybe a friend will mention it to you. The point is that you will never be the same person again, you will transform into a better version of yourself.

In fact, people usually ask me how I have changed since I left home. If I could analyse myself before starting travelling and compare it with the person who I am now, I could most certainly say that I have become a better person and a better human being. Travelling makes everything a lot more incredible, how?

Let me share 5 examples of how travelling makes you a better person:

Three smiling friends cheering their glasses over a mealSociability: I have had the chance to travel with family, friends and, mainly, alone. When you travel alone without knowing anybody, you end up having two options: making friends along the way or ending up in your hotel room sobbing over your pillow, alone! You will always find people travelling, so why not decide to become friends and write a piece of your history together? Whilst travelling you learn to speak with people, to get to know people, you learn that although you may come from very different social or cultural backgrounds, you can still find heaps of things in common. Before starting travelling I was a lot more introverted, it was hard for me to meet new people and socialise with them. Nowadays, I am happy speaking to anyone, no matter where they come from or where I met them.

Hello in Different LanguagesLanguages: Once you have managed to open up a little, you won’t only become more sociable and able to speak to anyone. You will also learn new languages, and first of all the universal language that unifies us all as human beings. You will often realise that you can understand people even when you don’t know their language, it is all a matter of making the effort. Then, one day, you will find yourself having a conversation in a different language without even knowing how, and you will love it!

Sleeping on an airport floorAdaptation: You will find yourself in many different situations, from sleeping in a city’s best suite, to sleeping on the floor of a train station, or sharing a room with 20 people in a cozy hostel dorm room. You will miss trains and flight connections. Those are just a few of the character-building type of situations that you may never encounter if you don’t travel. The more you travel, the more you will be exposed to unpredictable events. When you learn to be more adaptable, you don’t get mad or frustrated anymore, nor will you find yourself getting angry. Instead, you start thinking in a more practical and intelligent way, finding the quickest and easiest way to adapt to a situation. Change your plans, enjoy what you have, and simply forget about complaining.

5 multicultural friends, travelling makes you a better personEducation: When you are out there exploring the world, whether you like it or not, you will end up learning a lot of new things. There is no doubt you will learn a lot about the people, history and culture of the places you visit, without mentioning those small little information like where is the best Shawarma in Barcelona, or that free small beautiful museum no one has ever heard of. But most importantly, you will learn a lot about the world and why people behave in the way they do. You will learn to experience any event with a more open mind. You will learn what ‘culture’ means, and how we can all be extremely different, yet so very similar at the same time.

A group of smiling people jumping in happinessHappiness: Travelling simply makes you happier. Besides making you a better person thanks to the points I have explained above, it will make you feel a lot more sure of yourself, and will teach you to value everything you have. You will learn to see the world as a better place to live. There is no doubt that in seeing how people can be happy in the most different and extreme circumstances, this will make you see that you have everything you need to be happy. Travelling makes you a better and happier person. When you learn a bit more about the world and the people that live in it, you will become a more open minded person, more adaptable, more humble… simply an incredibly happier person.
