Our Romantic 4-Day Iquitos Amazon Tour in Peru

Imagine the thrill of stepping into the heart of the world’s largest rainforest, where untamed nature and vibrant wildlife surround you at every turn. Recently married and seeking an unforgettable adventure, my husband and I embarked on a 4-day journey deep into the Amazon Jungle, starting from the bustling city of Iquitos, Peru. Our goal was to immerse ourselves in the rich biodiversity, indigenous culture, and awe-inspiring landscapes that make the Amazon Rainforest a true wonder of the natural world.

Join us as we recount our extraordinary Iquitos Amazon Tour, filled with thrilling boat rides along the majestic Amazon River, encounters with exotic wildlife, and magical moments that will forever be etched in our memories. In this blog post, we’ll take you through each day of our journey, from the moment we touched down in Iquitos to our bittersweet farewell to this enchanting paradise.

Day 1: Begin the Adventure

Our adventure began in Iquitos, a gateway to the Amazon like no other. After a brief stop in the city for last-minute preparations, we set off on a thrilling 3-hour boat ride up the Amazon River, heading towards our jungle lodge. Upon arrival, we were immediately captivated by the lush surroundings and the promise of exciting activities.

One of the highlights of our first day was the Leoncito Hike, where we marveled at the diverse flora and even tasted water from the Uncaria tomentosa vine. The possibility of encountering the world’s smallest monkey, the pigmy marmoset, and the thunderous howler monkey kept our excitement levels high. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we ventured on a boat ride to catch glimpses of caimans, nocturnal birds, and mysterious jungle mammals.

Day 2: Piranhas and Other Wildlife

With an early breakfast to energize us, we set off on a boat trip to Sapote Lagoon and Laguna Moena. Here, we encountered lazy bears and mischievous monkeys while trying our hand at piranha fishing in the Corriente and Purura lagoons. The area’s strangler vines added an otherworldly touch to our adventure.

In the evening, we embarked on a night walk in search of oversized frogs and the elusive anaconda’s favorite prey, tarantulas. Despite their ominous reputation, these spiders proved harmless to humans. And, if you happen to catch a piranha, our guide recommended releasing it back into the wild, a testament to our respect for the jungle’s delicate balance.

Day 3: Meet the Dolphins

Day 3 in Peru brought us one of the most magical moments of our trip as we swam in the Amazon River alongside pink and grey dolphins. These enchanting creatures played in the water nearby, a memory we’ll cherish forever. On our return to the lodge, we were introduced to the colossal Victoria Regia, the world’s largest aquatic plant.

Continuing our exploration, we embarked on a boat or canoe excursion to Jorge Caño, where the quest for the elusive Howler Monkey awaited. Later in the afternoon, we connected with the warm-hearted people of the jungle in San Juan de Yanayacu, sharing smiles, stories, and even picking up some exquisite handicrafts as souvenirs.

Day 4: Our Hearts Are Full

As our final day in the Amazon dawned, we ventured to the secluded Casha Lagoon, where we walked or rowed, depending on the river’s level, to witness a stunning array of bird species and curious monkeys. Our journey through the jungle had come full circle, and we boarded our boat for the return trip to Iquitos, where our adventure in Peru had begun.

With hearts full of memories and a deep appreciation for the natural wonders we had encountered, we bid adieu to the Amazon, promising to carry its spirit with us always. Our flight out of Iquitos marked the end of an unforgettable journey, leaving us forever changed by the mesmerizing beauty of the Amazon Rainforest.

Final Word

Our 4-day expedition into the Amazon Jungle was nothing short of a life-altering experience. From thrilling encounters with wildlife to heartwarming interactions with indigenous communities, every moment in Iquitos, Peru, was an adventure waiting to unfold. We left with a newfound understanding of the delicate balance of nature and a deep respect for the incredible biodiversity that thrives in this lush paradise.
